My favorite part of drawing is the initial sketch I draw before I begin refining things. The one pictured here is what I normally do before I start correcting the sketch and adding more shadows and so on. It’s simply a few marks on paper just to move things forward. Looking at it now, I can see that the smile in the source picture is wider and brings the cheekbone area higher and up closer to the eye. This and many corrections to the initial sketch are needed to make it look decent. But it’s the first burst of enthusiasm on the page, and that’s something.
As the source image, I used a picture of Tommasso Capozzoli of Florence, who wears the most beautiful white suit I have ever seen.
